Brief History of the vineyard A quick history of Chrysalis Vineyard is that it is one of the many vineyards located outside the village of Middleburg in the Virginia Piedmont area. The vineyard has seventy one acres of vineyards and a total of two hundred and nine acres of land with varieties of grapes for making wine. Chrysalis vineyards finally found its permanent roots in 1999 at Locksley estate. The first winery facility opened up with 10,000 square feet early in 2000 with the guidance of the award winning winemaker Alan Kinne. The current wine maker, Curtis Vincent, became the new guru for the vineyards in 2007. Norton Grape The Norton is a native American grape which attained international recognition in the 1800s as a premium wine making grape. The Norton has a rich history in wine making, and was almost lost during prohibition. The US government pulled up all the Norton grapes and supplanted them with concord grapes instead. The concord grapes are great for jelly, jam, and juices, but awful for wine. The largest planting of Norton is at Chrysalis Vineyards. Sarah’s Patio Sarah’s patio red and white are two wines specifically made at the Chysalis vineyard, The wine is a tribute to Sarah Girtrude Lynn and ancestral patron that acquired the Locksley plantation as the only living heir at the young age of fourteen during the early 1800s. Sarah’s grave stone was discovered on the land and is now on view for all to cherish. The two wines are sweet; Chrysalis Vineyards Sarah’s patio white is a citrus with floral aromas and crisp acidic sparkle, Chysalis Vineyards Sarah’s patio red is of a rose color with fresh fruit flavors balanced with a sweet tart. Both are suggested to be served chilled. New building opened. The new building opened to the public in early October 2015.
